Atlas V, SBIRS GEO 6, August 4, 2022

United Launch Alliance’s fifth mission of the year lifted off from Cape Canaveral at 6:29 a.m. EDT (1029 GMT) Thursday. An Atlas V 421 carrying a US Space Force missile warning satellite into orbit.

This is essentially a naked-eye view of the launch of Atlas V as seen from the Bennett Causeway on the Banana River.
Close to main-engine cutoff of the Atlas V’s first stage, a small “jellyfish” plume of expanding gasses was sunlit in the dawn sky. Below the main trail of exhaust is a small trail of smoke from a solid rocket motor that had been jettisoned and was falling back to Earth.
