I love photographing rockets, as you can see by perusing this website. But…I also photograph other things from time to time. Here’s some of those photos:
“Above the Fire” — an overnight star streak stack from a camping trip.
A Painted Bunting — this is a migratory bird that was stopping by Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, presumably on its way north as spring starts to blossom. Leaves are already starting to come out here, in the first week of February. Anyway, by summer, you won’t see a Painted Bunting anywhere near the coastline.
A Roseate Spoonbill, a year-round resident here. Often mistaken by visitors for Pelicans, these birds are large and comb the bottom of lakes and streams for food. Like Pelicans, they get their pinkish color from eating crustaceans, green algae and some bacterium.
These birds were nearly hunted to extinction by Plume hunting in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They’ve made a good comeback and are no rare sight here.
Speaking of Flamingos, here is one. There are a breeding pair and a small colony in Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.
Speaking of common sights, the Armadillo is one of those. It is a bit rare to see one out and about during daylight hours. I call them Armored Possums because they vaguely resemble the marsupials, but in fact are not related at all.
Surfing is a big sport here on Cocoa Beach, and it is a year-round sport:
